Strong 8K Custom Domain Setup: Why Cloudflare Error 1016 Appears and What to Check
A custom domain can make a reseller setup easier to manage, but buying a domain and seeing two nameservers in a panel does not mean they are connected. This guide separates registrar settings from DNS records and gives you a cautious way to diagnose error 1016 without guessing a server IP.
- A registrar sells and manages your domain; authoritative nameservers decide which DNS provider answers questions for it. These are different settings.
- If your domain is registered with Cloudflare Registrar, Cloudflare says you cannot change it to third-party nameservers. Its custom-branded nameservers are still Cloudflare nameservers, not a way to install another provider’s pair.
- Cloudflare 1016 means Cloudflare cannot resolve the origin. A missing valid A record or an unresolvable CNAME target are documented possibilities; the error alone does not prove which is wrong in your panel.
- Do not invent an origin IP, publish account URLs, or change your live domain’s delegation until the service owner confirms whether it requires nameservers, an A/AAAA record, a CNAME, or another supported integration.
The question comes from real support discussions, not a claim that one configuration fixes every reseller panel. In a September 14 r/Strong_8K thread, a user who bought a domain at Cloudflare reported error 1016 while trying to use nameservers from a panel. An earlier discussion asked for a written domain setup guide. Those accounts show what people are asking; Cloudflare’s own documentation is the source for the DNS facts below.
The three places involved in a custom-domain setup
1. Registrar
The company where the domain is registered. You control renewal, contact details and, where permitted, the domain’s authoritative nameservers here.
2. DNS host
The nameservers actually authoritative for the domain. They publish A, AAAA, CNAME, MX and other records as needed.
3. Service or panel
The system you are connecting. It must explicitly support the hostname and tell you which DNS method and values it requires.
A simple comparison: the registrar is where you manage the property’s registration; nameservers are the directory that tells visitors where to go; the service is the destination. Adding a domain name in the panel does not, by itself, update the registrar’s delegation or create a valid origin record.
Cloudflare explains authoritative nameservers in its DNS documentation. Review your registrar’s actual nameserver setting separately from any NS record you see inside a DNS-zone editor. They are not always the same operation.
Cloudflare Registrar versus Cloudflare DNS: the key distinction
If you registered your domain through Cloudflare Registrar, Cloudflare’s Registrar FAQ, updated August 3, 2026 says domains there must use Cloudflare nameservers and cannot use third-party nameservers. A panel-provided nameserver pair therefore cannot simply replace Cloudflare’s registrar-level pair. This is a policy of that registrar, not proof that every domain using Cloudflare DNS is unusable.
If the domain is registered elsewhere but uses Cloudflare for DNS, first check who the registrar is and what nameservers are set there. Depending on your registrar and the panel’s documented integration, you may be able to change the delegation at that registrar or keep Cloudflare DNS and use provider-approved DNS records. Never assume the panel accepts both methods.
Do you need to buy another domain? Not necessarily. Cloudflare documents transferring a domain to another registrar if third-party nameservers are required. Transfer eligibility, timing and business downtime deserve review first. If you only need a subdomain for another provider, Cloudflare also describes subdomain delegation as an option, but the panel must support it. Ask support for the exact supported path before paying for a second domain.
What error 1016 actually tells you
Cloudflare’s Error 1016 documentation, updated April 23, 2026 defines it as an origin DNS error: Cloudflare cannot resolve the origin server’s IP address. Examples include a missing valid A record and a CNAME pointing at an external name that does not resolve. Certain custom-hostname and SaaS setups have additional causes, including incomplete validation or a fallback-origin issue.
That diagnosis does not mean you should paste a guessed IP into Cloudflare. Only use origin values officially supplied for your authorized service and the particular hostname. A random A record can route customers to the wrong server, expose a service unintentionally, or create a misleading appearance of success.
A safe, step-by-step diagnostic checklist
- Identify your registrar. Verify where the domain is registered, not just where you log in to edit DNS. Confirm its current authoritative nameservers in the registrar dashboard and with a public NS lookup.
- Ask the panel for the required integration. Does your approved setup require switching domain nameservers, adding an A/AAAA record, adding a CNAME, or delegating a subdomain? Request the current written instructions and exact host value; do not rely on a screenshot from another account.
- Confirm the exact hostname. Check whether you are configuring the domain apex (example.com) or a subdomain (panel.example.com). The panel may require one but not the other.
- Preserve current DNS before changing delegation. Export or record existing website and email records, especially MX and TXT. Changing authoritative nameservers can make existing records disappear from public DNS unless copied to the new zone.
- Check the DNS path that is actually active. If the panel supplies nameservers, verify they are set at the registrar where that is supported. If it supplies records for a Cloudflare-managed zone, verify the approved A/AAAA or CNAME target resolves as Cloudflare instructs. An NS entry added inside the wrong zone is not a substitute for correct registrar delegation.
- Allow time and test both locations. DNS updates may take time to propagate. Recheck public NS and the intended hostname, then test only the authorized service’s own setup or validation screen. If 1016 persists, collect the exact error and timestamps for support.
Never share: full playlist URLs, credentials, private tokens, account IDs or unredacted dashboard screenshots in Reddit threads. A support request only needs the domain or hostname, registrar, intended connection method, observed DNS result, time of test and sanitized error message.
Which fix applies to your situation?
| Situation | Check before acting | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare Registrar domain; panel requires third-party nameservers | Verify that third-party delegation really is required | Ask panel support about a supported DNS-record or subdomain alternative; evaluate a registrar transfer if none exists. |
| Another registrar; panel gave nameservers | Compare current registrar-level NS with the exact pair supplied for your account | Follow the panel’s approved delegation instructions and preserve existing DNS records. |
| Cloudflare DNS; panel gave a CNAME hostname | Confirm the target resolves and that the panel supports this method | Use the exact approved target, then check Cloudflare’s 1016 guidance if resolution fails. |
| Cloudflare DNS; panel requests an IP | Confirm that the IP came from authoritative panel support | Create only the approved record; never guess or borrow an IP from another reseller. |
| NS resolves but service validation fails | Check domain versus subdomain, panel hostname status, and elapsed propagation time | Escalate with redacted DNS results and error details. |
Questions to send your authorized panel support
Copy the questions, not your password, into a support ticket:
- Do you require third-party authoritative nameservers, or is a Cloudflare-managed DNS record supported?
- Do you support my apex domain or only a subdomain?
- What exact nameserver pair or DNS record is assigned to this account, and where must it be entered?
- Does the hostname require a separate validation or SSL activation step after DNS changes?
- What should I check if the domain resolves but your application still rejects the hostname?

Frequently asked questions
Can I change Cloudflare Registrar to a panel’s third-party nameservers?
Cloudflare says no: domains registered with its registrar use Cloudflare nameservers. You can ask whether the panel supports records under Cloudflare DNS, delegate an eligible subdomain with the panel’s help, or consider transferring the domain to a registrar that permits the required delegation.
Is Cloudflare error 1016 always a wrong IP?
No. Cloudflare lists several origin-resolution causes, including an absent A record and an unresolvable CNAME target. Custom-hostname configurations may introduce other causes. Check your actual configuration before changing records.
Do I have to buy a new domain?
Not automatically. First determine whether the existing domain can be used with a supported DNS method or transferred. Buying another domain before confirming the panel’s requirements may repeat the problem.
Does adding NS records inside the Cloudflare DNS editor switch my domain’s nameservers?
Not for the entire domain. Registrar-level delegation determines which authoritative nameservers answer for the zone. A zone’s NS records can serve other purposes, such as delegated subdomains, and should not be confused with changing the registrar’s nameserver setting.
How long does the change take?
Timing depends on the registrar, DNS caching, the change made and any panel-side validation. Use public DNS checks and the service’s documented status indicators rather than a fixed promised timeframe.
